Who is this course for?

If you’re a member of NAPIT’s electrical full scope Competent Person Scheme, or have equivalent experience and qualifications, and you’re looking to add a new string to your bow, then this could be the course for you.

Why take this course?

This course is specifically designed for experienced electricians who are interested in expanding or diversifying their business by learning to install this emerging technology.

As hybrid and electric vehicles become increasingly popular, the demand for commercial and, increasingly, domestic electric vehicle charging points will grow with it. Fuel costs for some Electric Vehicles can be around a sixth of those faced by those using conventionally fuelled vehicles – and the technology is constantly evolving. As petrol and diesel prices rise, EV charging can only grow in popularity.

This course covers (over 2 days)

Covering two days this course will give you the practical skills and technology specific knowledge required to install EV charging points with confidence.

Day 1

  • Session 1: Introduction, BS7671 section 722 and the IET Code of Practice
  • Session 2: Modes of charging, EVSE, restrictions
  • Session 3: Installation practices, risk assessment, earthing, protection, labelling & practical exercises

Day 2

  • Session 1: On street, commercial & industrial situations
  • Session 2: Inspection, testing, fault finding & maintenance
  • Session 3: Certification & notification to DNO
  • Session 4: Practical assessment and online exam (C&G 2919)

Course Structure

The course is designed to help installers take advantage of the opportunities presented by the growing low carbon transport sector. It will provide the installation skills and knowledge to help you to make the most of potential consumer demand for low-cost alternatives to conventional fuel as well as the tax reductions and incentives going electric can provide.

The course will cover;

  • EV charging equipment installation in line with the IET Code of Practice
  • Necessary preparative surveys, including earthing arrangements
  • Charging modes, charging equipment, connectors and cables
  • Installation requirements for domestic, on street, commercial and industrial premises
  • Inspection, testing and maintenance
  • And DNO notification

Course Materials

On attendance of the course, you will need to bring the following:

  • IET Requirements for Electrical Installations BS7671:2008 amd 3 (2015)
  • IET Guidance Note 3
  • IET Onsite Guide BS7671:2008 amd (2015)
  • IET Code of Practice for Electric Vehicle Charging Equipment Installations 2nd Edition
  • Your own test equipment and in date calibration certificate (we can provide test equipment if required)

Course requirements

Candidates will require an Inspection and Testing qualification (C&G 2394/2395 or equivalent) as well as experience in electrical installations.

On Completion of the Course

On successful completion of this course, candidates will receive a City & Guilds 2919 Certificate of Competence, demonstrating their ability to install a range of EV charging points in compliance with the latest amendments to BS 7671 and the IET Code of Practice.
