You will learn how to design, install, test and inspect a range of fire alarm and emergency lighting technologies, gaining the vital knowledge that will help you ensure your work complies with the relevant British Standards.

This Course Covers (over 3 days)

The need for fire alarm systems and emergency lighting is governed by ‘enforcing authorities’ who have a duty to enforce fire safety in domestic and non-domestic premises. When a system is required, the relevant British Standard is used for auditing by these ‘enforcing authorities’.

This course will provide a comprehensive overview of the relevant British Standards for these technologies, covering:

  • Legislation under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 and The Building Regulations 2000
  • BS5839-1:2013 Part 1 Fire detection and fire alarm systems for buildings
  • BS5839-6:2013 Part 1 Fire detection and fire alarm systems for buildings (domestic)
  • BS5266-1:2016 Emergency Lighting
  • BS5266-7:1999 Lighting applications - Emergency lighting
  • BS5266-8:2004 Emergency escape lighting systems
  • BSEN 1838:2013 Lighting applications - Emergency Lighting

This course is classroom based and includes theory and practical on custom made rigs with assessments taking place during the course.


The assessment process is two-fold,

  • Theory - The Fire Alarm theory assessment is a paper based, 30 question multiple choice assessment with a pass mark of 100%. The Emergency Lighting assessment is a paper based, 20 question multiple choice paper also with a 100% pass mark (two attempts are allowed with the assessment being open book).
  • The practical assessment- Includes the candidate carrying out the inspection and fault finding on a two zone fire alarm panel that includes, two zone fire alarm panel, two sounders, smoke and heat detectors and one break glass call point.


The candidate will also have to complete the commissioning process.

Course Materials

Candidates need to bring a passport sized photograph for this course. If a candidate has their own code of practices, these may be brought but copies are available for use during the course.

Course Requirements

Although there are no formal prerequisites, it is expected that you will have some previous installation experience and a basic knowledge of similar systems.

On Completion of the Course

Candidates will receive a City & Guilds Accredited Certificate and will have developed the skills and knowledge required to competently design, commission and inspect fire alarm systems and emergency lighting.
