Who is this Course For?

This distance learning programme is aimed at experienced electricians with at least two years’ experience. If you’re looking to demonstrate your wealth of experience with a competency assessment, then this could be the training programme for you.

The program covers the installation, inspection, testing, verification and certification of installations to BS 7671:2008 (2015). It will give you the opportunity to demonstrate your broad range of electrical knowledge and practical skills, keep up to date with all the latest Wiring Regulation amendments, and ultimately, deliver the highest safety standards for your customers.

It is appropriate for those wishing to work in either a domestic or commercial/ industrial environment.

Why Take this Course?

This course is specifically designed for highly skilled and experienced electricians looking to demonstrate their competence to work to Part P of the Building Regulations and/or undertake commercial/industrial work, including 3-phase.

For successful candidates who are able to provide evidence of work demonstrating 2 years of appropriate electrical experience, the course provides a direct route to NAPIT electrical membership.

Unlike some courses, subject to ongoing successful assessments if you chose to register on NAPIT’s Competent Person Scheme, this City and Guilds Accredited program will never need to be renewed.

This Course Covers

You will be provided with learning material for you to study in the comfort of your own home which will provide a comprehensive overview of Inspection and Testing to BS 7671:2008 Incorporating Amendment No.3 (2015) and is divided into the following topics:

•    Safety and regulations

•    Inspection procedures and practises

•    Safe isolation

•    Initial verification of system design

•    Instrumentation

•    Testing sequence

•    Certification

Course Structure

Distance Learning

•    Training material is provided on booking as a digital download, containing all relevant study documents, sample questions and exercises we aim to get this to you least 10 days prior to your booking

•    32 self-guided learning hours, strongly recommended

•    1/2 day theory: multiple choice online assessment at an approved training centre of your choice

•    1 day practical assessment: inspection and testing on approved 3-phase commercial and domestic installation assessment rigs and completion of a NAPIT Electrical Installation Certificate, Electrical Installation Condition Report and Minor Works Certificate.

When you attend, you will need to bring the following:

  • IET Requirements for Electrical Installations BS 7671:2008 Incorporating Amendment No3 (2015)

  • Memorandum of Guidance on the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989, HSE (available as a free download)

    IET Guidance Note 3
  • IET On-site Guide BS 7671:2008 Incorporating Amendment No.3 (2015)
  • Your own test equipment and in-date calibration certificate (test equipment can be provided if required)
  • 1 x passport photograph

Course requirements

Two years of appropriate electrical experience.  If you choose to become a NAPIT member after completion of this course, you will also need auditable evidence of work carried out to be able to demonstrate this.

On Completion of the Course

On successful completion of this course and its associated assessments, you will receive the following City and Guilds accredited certificate:

Competence in the Installation and Testing of Electrotechnical Systems NA7232-(5) (City and Guilds Accredited)

It will demonstrate your competence in line with the criteria of the industry recognised Electrotechnical Assessment specification and means you will be eligible to apply for NAPIT electrical membership. It therefore represents a step towards being able save time and money by self-certifying the electrical work you carry out under Part P of the Building Regulations.
